Counselors

Counselors must have completed their first year of college. The Bil-O-Wood counselor acts as the mother and/or father of each child during their stay at camp and must embody a level of maturity and responsibility suitable for this role. The counselor lives in the cabin with eight to fourteen campers and is the caregiver for each individual camper. Counselors are also responsible for instructing daily activities. Each cabin counselor is supported by an A.C. and/or a J.C. Counselors are required to have certification in water safety and CPR.

Canoe Trip Leaders

Counselors and staff members may also play the role of canoe trip leaders. Leaders must possess the qualifications as above for cabin counselors and must have experience in wilderness camping and canoeing. The higher the level of experience the higher level of trips the individual may lead. All leaders are supported by at least one or two co-leaders.

Assistant Counselors - AC

The assistant counselor role is given to persons entering their first year of college. At this stage, they are still too young to be an independent counselor but have surpassed the role of the J.C. A.C.'s are given more cabin responsibility and can independently instruct activities in camp. A.C.'s are not salaried employees and attend camp free of charge.

Junior Counselor - JC

Individuals qualified for the "J.C." position must be entering their senior year of high school. The junior counselor is enrolled as a camper but is given additional privileges. While enjoying all the benefits of a senior camper, the J.C. also plays a supportive role in assisting the counselor and working with the campers in the cabin, in activities, and on the trail. The objective for the J.C. position is to learn the responsibility of the counselor role through guided direction of the counselors, staff, and director. J.C.'s must be enrolled as full-season campers. Tuition for the J.C. is half the full-season fee.
